In Hebrew, a “judge” is not only one who administers and adjudicates on matters concerning God’s people; crucially, a judge is one who saves, called by God to lead the Israelites in defeating those who afflicted and oppressed them.
After all of Joshua’s generation were gathered to their fathers, new generations of Israelites arose that did not know the Lord who had brought them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Instead, the Israelites intermarried with neighboring peoples and conformed to their wicked practices, pursuing other gods and abandoning their covenant with God. So, God gave His people over to their enemies. In their distress, the Israelites cried out to God, who raised up judges to deliver them from affliction into a period of peace. Regretfully, as recorded in the Book of Judges, the Israelites persisted in this vicious cycle, of forsaking God, facing affliction, crying out to God, being delivered, enjoying peace, and forsaking God yet again.
In the Book of Judges, we witness how God called the judges into critical roles due to their faith and despite their flaws. Notably, four of the judges— Gideon, Barack, Samson, and Jephthah— have their names recorded among the “heroes of faith” in Hebrews 11. May the lives of the judges spur us on to cultivate the faith that conquers all weakness and to step into God’s abundant blessings.
