Peace be with you!
Have you ever questioned, “Where are you, God?” or heard non-Christians challenge, “Where is your God?” Perhaps, like Job in the Bible, you have even demanded God to show up in your pain and answer your cries for justice.
Yet, in the trenches of real life, when we cannot sense God’s presence and sink into feelings of disappointment or confusion, have we ever looked beyond God’s seeming absence to notice His outstretched, beckoning arms of love?
“I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before me.”
God so loves all who belong to Him that He keeps us from settling for idol worship. In blindness and neglect, have you been worshiping idols made by human hands, or idols who are important people in your life (including yourself), or even idols in the form of mistaken theology— false images of God Himself? God sees and shatters every idol as He meets us outside the box, in the midst of dissonance and darkness, simply because of His deep, deep love for us.
This month, we will be spotlighting SOWIM’s Book of Job Bible Study Set for small group or individual learning. To enable a deeper understanding of God’s words in this book, two of our social media series: Bible Mosaic flash cards and Motivation Monday Bible verses, will also center on Job.
To further enrich our learning, Rev. Susan Chen’s sermon “Encountering God Outside the Box” invites us into Job’s world. Let us enter into God’s words and examine: Am I worshiping merely a god-in-the-box whom I’ve heard about with my ears, or have I truly seen God with my eyes?
Yet, “faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.” The starting point for us to truly know God is not far from us, but found in His own words in the Bible. This is the very crux of SOWIM Taiwan’s Back to the Bible movement. Let us hear from Rev. Daniel Chuang:
Rooted Faith: Back to the Bible
In 1522 at the Wartburg castle, Martin Luther completed the German translation of the New Testament. The impact of this milestone on the Reformation is on par with Luther’s ninety-five theses nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg in 1517. To Luther, the Bible, as the precious revelation of God, should not only be recited as liturgy in Latin by priests. Instead, the Bible should be made accessible to all who follow Christ. Luther’s effort to bring God’s people back to the Bible was not only a momentous mark in church history. More critically, his proclamations tied to the very foundations of our Christian faith— not on buildings, not on programs, not even on innovation, but firmly on God’s own words.
In the past 40 years, the Taiwan church has gone through different models of growth. But there has yet to be a systematic revival of full dependence on the Bible. Burdened by this and responding to God’s call, SOWIM Taiwan will make “Back to the Bible” the center of our efforts. By engaging local churches in studying God’s words with solid multimedia resources, we hope to ignite a God-pleasing movement that yields eternal value by returning our focus on God’s own revelation to humankind.
♥ Book of Psalms Post-Production：“Dear God, it is you who called SOWIM to produce multimedia Bible study resources in response to your Great Commission by giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater. Holy Spirit, would you anoint each script writer and voice actor engaged in the Cantonese, Hakka, and Taiwanese dubbing of the Book of Psalms docudrama, so that your words can be delivered clearly and powerfully? Would you lead and provide for each stage of the Book of Psalms Bible Study Set production? From video editing, to the layout and cover design of the study guide, to the Blu-ray manufacturing process, to our communication as a team, we commit all of these into your hands and pray that our work and lives may be pleasing to you.”
♥ Book of Job English Version：“Our Father in heaven, thank you for revealing yourself to us so that we may know whom we have believed and have assurance that you are able to guard what we have entrusted to you (or, what you have entrusted to us) until Christ’s return! For the English version of the Book of Job Bible study video, we are in urgent need of a partnering studio that can help us in the final editing phase. We bring this need before your throne of mercy and grace. May your will, alone, be done.”
♥ SOWIM Taiwan：“Thank you, God, for moving brothers and sisters at Wei-Dau Methodist Church in Taichung to support the Back to the Bible movement and hosting SOWIM’s Bible Seminar on November 15th, 2020. Would you anoint Pastor Daniel Chuang’s mouth, heart, and life as he delivers your message in the Book of Ruth and the Book of Job? Would you shine your light on the hearts of every attendee? Guide us to make your own words and revelation the center of our hearts and the focus of our lives.
♥ SOWIM Team Members：“Our dear coworker Ivy has not been able to return to the U.S. ever since the pandemic began. Lord, would you make a way for Ivy to get a visa interview and be cleared to return to a new season of ministry for you? Thank you, God, for bringing sister Rung-Huey Kao, with her background and gifting in technology and design, to SOWIM as our new coworker in Taiwan. All praise and thanksgiving be to you, Yahweh-Yireh!”
