Dear brothers and sisters, greetings and peace to you in the Lord!
Jesus says, “… love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt. 5:44). People often feel this scripture is not realistic and difficult to practice, but I witnessed a real-life example.
In this trip to the Middle East, we used the newly published Arabic version of the Book of Esther Bible study set to lead several seminars in the local Christian churches on how to use the Bible study sets published by SOW. There were two days when Pastor R. drove us to different places. I found that at every intersection when the red light was on, he always took out money from a small bag that he prepared and gave it to every person who came to beg for money. From the small hats and head covers of the beggars, I can tell that they are Muslims. Pastor R is not wealthy, but he never refused any of them.
Actually, every month there are incidents of attacks on churches and Christians by the local Muslims. Every church I visited is behind closed tall iron gates, and all windows facing streets are also tightly closed. Some churches even set up roadblocks to keep the terrorists from throwing bombs to kill brothers and sisters. Although Christians and these Muslims are both Arabs, the Christians are persecuted because of their belief in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross and was resurrected on the third day to accomplish the Gospel of eternal salvation. In the midst of such serious conflict and tension, Pastor R. never refused a Muslim who begged money from him.
Then I asked him curiously why he could be so friendly and generous to the Muslims who hate Christians? He told me that his love of their souls is more than their hatred toward the Christians. In every folded bill, he placed a small card with a message of the Gospel. By doing this he sows the seed of the Gospel and eliminates the hatred with love and practical support. Pastor R. did what Jesus commanded. Jesus says, “They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me” (John 14:21). I believe that every time when Pastor R. hands out the money, he really lives out his love toward Jesus Christ.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, today, you and I also love Jesus. Are we also willing to rescue the souls that are still imprisoned in the darkness with our sincere love and practical support? After each seminar during this trip to the Middle East, many pastors came to hold my hands and asked me to pray for them. They could not wait to bring back the SOW Bible study sets to their churches. In just a few days, all 2000 sets of Bible study sets were handed out completely. After I returned to the US, the 150-year-old Cairo seminary that is the only Christian seminary in Egypt asked us to send them 400 Bible study sets for their students to study and for their graduates to use at the churches they serve. They long for more SOW Bible study sets to support their churches and ministries in Egypt.
Today the Holy Spirit is bringing a wave of spiritual revival in the Muslim world. I sincerely invite you to join us in our effort to produce the Arabic version of the Book of Ruth Bible study set. Many Arab churches need our care and support, and they are waiting for such spiritual resources. Let us work and pray together, so that through our love and real actions, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.” (Isa 9:2)
Sincerely yours in Christ,
